CDR.fyi posted the CDR (Carbon Dioxide Removals) summary for Q2 2025 that showed 90% or durable CDR delivery volume is from biochar carbon removals.

There is still huge gap between contracted volume (~15 million tonnes) with actual delivery in 2025 up to date (~0.1 million tonnes). However, there is incremental volume delivery from 2023 until 2025. The delivered volume in 2023 and 2024 are 0.15 million tonne and 0.32 million tonne respectively, indicated the growth of biochar projects worldwide.

BiCRS projects continued to dominate delivery volume over all other CDR methods. BCR, Biomass Direct Storage, and Biomass Geological Sequestration accounted for 97% of total deliveries, totalling 110 thousand tonnes. Other methods made up the 3% of total deliveries, with contributions from Mineralization (O.C.O Technology), Enhanced Weathering (Mati), and Alkalinity Enhancement (CREW and Limenet).

BECCS led the way amongst durable CDR methods, with 90% of contracted volume. Biochar continued to be a popular choice with purchasers at 9%, with all others accounting for 1.3% of contracted volume in Q2.

Which were the top methods by deliveries in Q2 2025?

Durable carbon removal deliveries reached 116.8K tonnes in Q2 2025. While BECCS led with sales, with 13.95 million tonnes, Biochar continues to lead in deliveries (despite accounting for 1.39M tonnes in sales in Q2):

* Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR) delivered 90 % of the total deliveries, continuing its role as the main source of verifiable tonnes.
* Biomass Direct Storage and Biomass Geological Sequestration added another 7K tonnes (6.6 %), as deliveries for other BiCRS methods stood at 97 % of the total.
* Mineralization, Enhanced Weathering, and Alkalinity Enhancement together accounted for the remaining 3 %.
